Here is a video to get you started. Please keep in mind that there is controversy over what the true facts and myths are regarding Christopher Columbus. When teaching about such controversial topics, I believe it is important to help students understand that not everything they read or hear is a fact. How do we determine facts from myths? This can be an entire unit in and of itself; however, it really should be at the surface of every topic requiring research and discovery of information.

Columbus Day Craft: This foldable craftivity works well in a social studies or literacy center. The students will color, cut, and paste sentences under flaps while determining if each sentence is a fact or myth. Students may use the sentences provided, or conduct their own research to write their own sentences. A debate could follow to support various facts or myths found. hearing both sides of the story, forming opinions based on facts and determining if the facts are indeed facts are definitely essential skills and extremely relevant and current. An answer key is provided.

This is a fun whole group reading activity. There are three scenes with 10 reading comprehension questions and answers for each scene.
The play is written in the months before Christopher Columbus set sail. It begins with school boys talking about Christopher Columbus and calling him crazy! Student will read about his encounters with the King and his courtiers. The story continues with Christopher Columbus' maps being stolen! Finally, he obtained ships from the King with help from the Queen. The last scene takes place on one of Christopher Columbus' ships and how the sailors were feeling about their journey.
This readers theater play is reformatted from the project Gutenberg play. The set of comprehension questions are copyright protected and for the buyer's single classroom use only.
Note: This is a fictional, reader's theater play. It may be based on some truths and some myths. This play could lead into a research project and great discussion about facts and myths regarding Christopher Columbus.
