Five Activity Ideas for The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak

1. Allow the students to read the book aloud themselves.  Record them making different expressions and sounds for the fun words.

2.  Allow the students to create illustrations for this book to hang on the bulletin board.  For example,  a blueberry pizza head. Next, the students may write a short paragraph or story about the character they created.

3. Have the students create a list of five to ten nonsense words from the book.  In their journals, have them create at least five new nonsense words.  Write definitions for the the new words and use them in a complete sentences. Students may also draw pictures to go along with their sentences.

4. Discuss visual imagery and descriptive words with your students.  Explain how even though there are nonsense words, the students can close their eyes and create a picture.  Have them write a paragraph and read it to a partner with his/her eyes closed. Can the partner create a picture for the words?

5. Discuss the word "onomatopoeia" with the students. This is the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named.  Have the students identify some onomatopoeia words from the book.

This is a companion activity for the book Stellaluna; however, it could be modified for this book as well.

 onomatopoeia vocabulary activities

Your students will first learn the definition of onomatopoeia, which is the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named. Next, they will identify some word example phrases from the Stellaluna book. If you aren't using the book, the students can make up phrases or use a different book. Finally, the students will create a little book of onomatopoeia words.
