10 Fun Facts Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

1) He was the youngest male to win a Nobel Peace Prize at age 35 in 1964.

2) He donated all of the $54,123 from winning the Nobel Peace Prize to the Civil Rights movement.

3) He skipped two grades in high school, 9th and 11th grades, and entered Morehouse College at 15.

4) Over 700 streets in the United States are named after MLK.

5) Besides MLK, only George Washington and Christopher Columbus have national holidays named after them.

6) At age six, his father changed his name from Michael King, Jr. to Martin Luther King, Jr.

7) The first MLK holiday was on January 20, 1986.

8) His non-violent civil rights work led to passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

9) His "I Have a Dream" speech delivered in 1963 in Washington D.C. was ranked as the top speech of the 20th Century.

10) The "I Have a Dream" speech was largely improvised and was witnessed by 250,000 people.
